“Case study approach makes library managers more effective decision makers” - L.J. Haravu, editor of ‘Case Studies for Teaching Library Management’
Teachers of Library and Information Science will find the case study method useful in training students and in library management. Typical problem situations faced in libraries cannot be taught theoretically and therefore the Case Method is used. The Case Method can also be used by library managers in effective decision making as it will involve staff at all levels in a democratic manner to address problems related to personnel, that related to users of the library, threats from external competition, particularly from the Internet, and so on thus said Sri. L.J. Haravu.

Book Review 1:
'Report of OCLC Reordering Ranganathan: Shifting User Behaviors, Shifting Priorities by Lynn Silipigni Connaway and Ixchel Faniel' by: Dr. N.S. Harinarayana, Associate Professor, DoS LIS, University of Mysore, Mysuru
Dr N.S. Harinarayana, Associate Professor, Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, and an EC member of MyLISA gave the first talk in the series. The book that he talked about on the day was the recent research report of OCLC “Reordering Ranganathan: Shifting User Behaviors, Shifting Priorities" by Lynn Silipigni Connaway and Ixchel Faniel.
Ranganathan’s five laws, as enunciated in his book “Five Laws of Library Science”, depict the philosophy of LIS profession in five simple and succinct sentences. Originally it was published in 1931. They are the mantra of every LIS professionals. The laws became classic over the period. The five laws became the research point for many studies. They attracted the attention of the international scholars also. Since its enunciation, the laws are being revisited many a times by scholars at various periods of study to re-examine their validity. The OCLC report, submitted in 2014, is one such instance. The SRELS Journal of Information Management published an abstracted version of the report. The original report is around 136 pages.

The report emphatically claims that the five laws of library science are relevant even today. It examines the same laws with the new lens. The users’ behaviour and priorities have changed. We have moved from an era of content scarcity to one of incredible abundance and diversity, which is being contributed to by a multitude of channels and contributors. Hence, it is argued in the report that the laws of nature may not have changed, but nature itself has. In this context, the report not only re-arranges the five laws but also rephrases them. While the second law remains second law with a different phrase, the fifth law has the distinction of retaining its place and wordings unchanged. The new sequence and interpretation of the laws are (the original laws are given in brackets): “Embed library systems and services into users’ existing workflows” (Save the time of the reader); “Know your community and its needs” (Every person his or her book); “Develop the physical and technical infrastructure needed to deliver physical and digital materials” (Books are for use); “Increase the discoverability, access and use of resources within users’ existing workflows” (Every book its reader); and “Library is a growing organism”.

At the end Dr N.S. Harinarayana concluded his talk on the report by giving his observations. The report is an excellent piece of research work by others on Ranganathan’s work when Indian librarians have given scant attention. However, the speaker also critically observed some issues in the report. He opined that undue importance has been provided in the OCLC report to the sequence of the laws. Further, he also said the Ranganathan’s suggestions were more concrete and practically viable than those found in the report. The original laws are simple, straight forward and easily comprehendible. The readers’ perspective, the book “Five laws of library science” runs like a fiction, but the OCLC report is more technical with lots of quotations and survey reports. The speaker said that he enjoyed reading the report, and he called upon the students, researchers, and librarians to read the report that gives much insight into the present day information environment.

Inauguration of 'Book Talk in Library Science' Series
Dr Mazaffer H. Assadi, Professor and Chairman, Department of Political Science, University of Mysore, delivering the inaugural talk
Dr Mazaffer H. Assadi, Professor and Chairman, Department of Political Science, University of Mysore, delivering the presidential remarks
"Book talk in library science”, a new initiative from MyLISA, will be held serially. The inaugural of the series was conducted on November 18, 2015, as a part of National Week Celebrations by MyLISA. The eminent scholar Dr Mazaffer H. Assadi, Professor and Chairman, Department of Political Science, University of Mysore, presided over the function.
Dr. Assadi in his presidential remarks said that any book needs to be assessed in the context in which it is published. He recalled his days of searching for information during graduation. There is a paradigm shift in all spheres of academic activities. There is a debacle of the traditional library as an institution. It has changed its functions and role in the society. The libraries have to reach out to the users in the ways and means demanded by him/her. They have to adopt the new technology without any prejudice or fear.
Dr Sarasvathy P., Secretary, MyLISA welcomed the gathering, and Dr C.P. Ramasesh, EC member of MyLISA, thanked the audience for the support and encouragement to the new initiative of MyLISA. Smt. Tejaswini was the master of ceremony on the occasion. The members from MyLISA, the Mysore University Library, MyDLIS, local press and others were present on the occasion. It is hoped that the book talk series will continue successfully in the days to come.

As one of the well-wishers of MyLISA commented, it has rather become a habit for the association to come out with innovative ideas. The aspiration is not without reasons. MyLISA had many success stories in the past in the form of Tent Library, Pusthaka Dasara (Book donation camp), Promotion of Reading Habits Program, Publish or Perish, MyLISA OPENS, and so on. It is but natural that the performance bar is kept higher every next effort. We as an association are happy to note that LIS fraternity is waiting to see something new from MyLISA every year.
This expectation gives us satisfaction but at the same time throws a challenge to perform better than previous efforts. We strive very hard to achieve the goal. We thank the MyLISA community for continuously feeding us with a lot of new ideas. We also thank the executive members who stood behind us in all our efforts.
On the National Library Week this year, MyLISA is happy to announce that we have launched a program called ‘Adopt and Nurture a Library.' The idea is to support a library to grow into a professional and model library by adopting it for a year. The expertise of the members of MyLISA is drawn, completely on an honorary basis, to help the library. After a brief survey, MyLISA decided to adopt the ‘Arivu School Library’ for the academic year 2015-16.
The word Arivu, a common homonym in Kannada, has a number of meanings. It means awareness, scholarship, knowledge, understanding, cognisance, information, insight, perception and so on. As a word, it is simple to write, read and use. A school in Mysore is named as ‘Arivu’. Like the word itself, the school is also special in many ways. It was founded to be an innovative and “learning is activity based, collaborative, and relevant to everyday life.” One who visits Arivu finds a different schooling environment altogether. Some of the features include, the classrooms are in natural settings, interaction with teachers by the students is very informal, there is no school uniform, students learn while they play, no homework, no written rule book, learning is not over-burden with teaching the subjects, and so on.
The Open Education School ‘Arivu’ provides primary education in Kannada from pre-kindergarten (Pre KG) to 7th Class. The school was in need of support to organize their library and to plan the library classes for the young minds. The MyLISA committee consisting of with Dr. N.S. Harinarayana, Dr. Sunil M.V., and Smt. P. Rukhminamma visited the school several times and worked out the formalities with the management of Arivu School for extending the support from MyLISA. Finally, on the day of birthday celebration of the library legend Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, i.e., on August 12, 2015, the representatives from MyLISA entered into an agreement to adopt and nurture the school library of Arivu. The program was took-off with the submission of a detailed report to Dr. Manohar, Managing Trustee, Arivu Education Trust, by MyLISA Committee members. It was accepted, and a few activities have already begun. There was an interaction between the school authorities and a group lead by MyLISA included Smt. Usha Mukund, Staff Member, Center for Learning (CFL), Smt. Rashmi Kumbar, Former Teacher Librarian, Adani Vidya Mandir, Ahmedabad; and MyLISA Exeutive Committee Members & Coordinators of this Program Dr. N.S. Harinarayana, Dr. M.V. Sunil, and Smt. P. Rukhminiamma.
Smt. Usha Mukund visited the school again on October 1, 2015 and conducted a few library oriented activities to promote the use of books and reading habits among the children.
The technical processing work and library automation have been started and likely to be completed by February 2016.
It is interesting to note that parents of the school children are joining hands with MyLISA in this ‘Adopt and Nurture a Library.' We take this opportunity to thank them as well as the school teachers who have not found themselves lagging behind from participating in this novice development program.
MyLISA is also helping the school library by identifying the philanthropists for funding its activities. Already Rotary Midtown Mysuru has extended financial support for purchase of book racks. Prof. N.R. Govinda Sharma has donated the system (Computer) which has greatly help for automation activity on Koha. The book labels and other accessories required for acquisitions work and cataloguing work was provided by Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Institute for Management Development (SDMIMD) Mysuru.

Yoga helps in controlling the mind and its turbulence said Dr. Chandrashekar. Quoting from Adi Shankaracharya’s Viveka-Cuda-Mani, he said Deer (Kuranga), elephant (Matanga), moth (Patanga), fish (Mina) and wasp (brmga) all die from their attachment to one of the five senses, sound etc., and so what about the man who is attached to all five! He said yoga helps to some extent to control the temptations from the senses. He said yoga is not just asanas (body postures) but is the goal of life for Indians which is self realization. “Internet, if it takes the physical form, is bigger than ‘Brahmanda’ where the text, images, videos, audios, etc., are its components and found in abundance. We are facing the problem of information deluge, and as such the Internet is untamed. Man does not need so much of information to live and survive” said Prof. M. Krishne Gowda, St. Philomena’s College, Mysore and a popular humorist in his inaugural address at the 14th MyLISA Annual Day at Manasa Media Center, Mysore University Library, Mysore. Addressing the gathering of librarians he said “the mankind requires gadgets but they should not replace humans.” He expressed his apprehension that man is becoming a parasite to machines and many of the capabilities of man are depleting due to the onslaught of machines. Citing himself as an example, he said he once used to remember and recall more than 300 phone numbers but after the invasion of mobiles, his memory for phone numbers has fallen drastically. He quoted the T.S. Eliot saying ‘Where is the Life we have lost in living? Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?’ The audience bursts into laughter when he added “Where is information we have lost in examination?”
Prof. Krishne Gowda, a scholar in Kannada, started his speech with a starting quote from Kaviraja Marga – the first Kannada epic. He interpreted it with a dual meaning to explain the virtues of ‘Goddess Saraswathi’ and the value of ‘Akshara’ (the letters which epitomizes the knowledge). He said “Library is store house of knowledge and no one can ever read all that is available in a library”. The speaker said ‘I feel disturbed every time I come out of a library or a book store realizing the amount of knowledge that I need to acquire yet’. He aptly remembered the greatest philosopher and scholar Socrates who replying to a question once said he (Socrates) is a very knowledgeable person in the world as he clearly understands that he knows ‘nothing’. He cautioned the youngsters that rich and easy access to information through internet makes them tend to feel that one knows everything. “The technology have made knowledge a commodity” said Prof. Krishne Gowda sarcastically. He opined that “the privacy is lost and we are unnecessarily connected and wasting our precious time and energy in maintaining the network. People have more and more information but less and less knowledge and wisdom”. With his characteristic wit he said ‘we have mistaken the sign boards of cities (information) as the location of City itself (Knowledge)’. Prof. Gowda expressed his concern about the decrease in reading habits among young generation. He also said that many a times the information on Internet is either unused or abused. He called upon librarians to focus on their services in addressing these issues. Further, he suggested the librarians community to come out with an effective program on ‘art of reading’. History has innumerable inspiring examples of voracious readers in the form of Swami Vivekananda, Osho Rajaneesh, and so on. The annual news bulletin “MyLISA News” was also released during the Annual Day celebration by Prof. Gowda. While appreciating the quality of content in this bi-lingual publication, he said the content in Kannada should be created in all domains of knowledge. Once a meek English language has now become a powerful language content was created in all spears of human activity. The current issue of MyLISA News contains article written by Ramanuga Iyengar in 1904. The importance of library and company of books as perceived by Rabindranath Tagore is printed in this newsletter for inspiration to the readers. The elegance of translation from A.R. Krishnashastry may be seen this article. K.S. Deshpande, the Rajyotsava awardee and the Bhishma of LIS profession in Karnataka, has also contributed an article in this issue of MyLISA News. The newsletter contains ‘MyLISA in 2025’ and ‘MyLISA in MyView’ write-ups received from the MyLISA members and EC members respectively as a new feature of this year’s newsletter. Earlier Dr. C.P. Ramashesh, Vice-President, MyLISA welcomed the gathering and introduced the Chief Guest. Dr. N.S. Harinarayana, Secretary, MyLISA presented the glimpses on the activities of MyLISA during 2013-15. Sri S. Nagaraja, President, MyLISA presided over the function and Dr. Sunil M.V. presented the vote of thanks. |

Sri. D.N. Nagaraja Rao passes away
It is very saddening to note that Sri D.N. Nagaraja Rao passed away on December 5, 2014 at the age of 81. Sri. Nagaraja Rao was a very active librarian from Mysore. He served the National Institute of Engineering, Mysore for nearly three decades and retired from the official service from the same institute. Later he rendered his services at Ramakrishna Vidyashala and created a database of books in CDS/ISIS during 1990s. He was very passionate for books. He had his own collection of books of more than ten thousands in his house. He even created a database of all those books in CDS/ISIS. He added the abstracts and table of contents of all the books in the database. His collection was characterized by the richness of subjects such as philosophy, personality development, religion, social sciences, English literature and library sciences. He was the habit of purchasing multiple copies of books of Ramakrishna Mission and was giving them as gifts to children and those who help him in some way. He was very proud of his own collection and as a true librarian he was enthusiastically introduce his library to those who visited his house. He was very much interested to guide children and motivate them for inculcating reading habits.
At MyLISA he was the most attended member in all its activities. He was quite punctual and was keen to collect the presentations, papers and other informative literature. His interest in learning new technology, eagerness to get new ideas and hardworking nature made him a role model for many younger generation professionals. He did not lose his inquisitiveness till his death. He was interacting with many professionals in Mysore. He even pen down, recently, his own experiences under the title ‘Reminiscence of a retired librarian’. MyLISA would post that on its website after getting consent from his family members.
The sad news of his journey to the permanent abode came during a Two-Day National Conference on Social Media in Libraries held jointly by SBRR Mahajana College and MyLISA. The delegates immediately pay homage to the departed soul by observing two minute silence. The delegates joined MyLISA to collectively pray the Almighty to rest his soul in eternal peace.

Padmashree S.R. Ranganathan, known as father of library movement in India, has succinctly given the philosophy of library services in the form of five fundamental laws. The third one is ‘every book its reader’. The emphasis of the law is that librarians need to be active in helping the books to discover their readers. MyLISA, the local association of librarians, tries to conform to this law by way of organizing many activities. One such activity is ‘Book dasara’.
Books are treasures. People with reading passion develop their own book treasures. After their use, the books lie unused, and remain in the treasury, sometimes eternally, waiting for someone to read them. They will be craving for their freedom. MyLISA heard their grumbling sound and come out with a new campaign under the banner ‘Book dasara’ with the support of Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, Mysore. Incidentally, the etymological meaning derived from Sanskrit of the word dasara is ‘remover of bad fate’ (Dasha-hara). Book dasara is a campaign to collect from the donors and distribute the ‘used books’ to the libraries. This campaign is being held first time in Mysore.

The 'Tent library’ was inaugurated on September 1, 2014 by Dr. V. Karikalan IFS, Deputy Conservator of Forest, Government of Karnataka. Sri H.R. Basappa, Deputy Director, Department of Public Institutions, Government of Karnataka; and Sri. Nagaraja S., President, MyLISA Mysore; were the special invitees. The programme was presided by Sri B. Manjunath, Deputy Director, Department of Public Libraries, City Central Library, Government of Karnataka.
Dr. N.S. Harinarayana, Secretary, MyLISA Mysore, introduced the concept of Tent Library and presented the various sessions scheduled for 'Library Hour' of the Tent School Time Table. Dr. Mallinath Kumbar, Professor, DoS LIS, University of Mysore and Dr. Chandra Patil, Officer, Sarvar Shikshana Abhiyaan, graced the occasion. Background “Books for all” is the dictum propounded by Dr. S.R. Ranganathan. He wanted library books for all socioeconomic groups, not just well-educated scholars interested in public domain items. It is the responsibility of the library profession to work towards achieving this goal. MyLISA has put forward its little foot in this direction by mooting the idea of a ‘Tent Library’. Mysore Dasara is the Nadahabba (Karnataka State - Festival). One of the central attractions of the ten-day festivities is the five kilometer Jumboo Savari – the procession by the main elephant accompanied by other elephants carrying the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari, the sitting deity of Mysore. The preparation for the procession is done eight weeks before the actual procession. The elephants are brought from nearby forest and trained for the purpose. The trainers of elephants – the mahouts – come and stay at Mysore along with their families. Mysore district administration provides them all facilities to their families. Temporary school is started for their children at the premises where they reside inside the palace ground. One of the ardent librarians from Mysore observed that these children lack library facility during that period. He mooted an idea with MyLISA to think of library service to reach the unreached. Acting upon the idea, MyLISA was successful in convincing the district administration of Mysore to extend the library services through Department of Public Libraries, City Central Library, Mysore. As a result a ‘Tent Library’ was established in the premises of the palace where the mahouts reside. These library being a part of school, regular library hours will be included in the school time-table. Staffs from the City Central Library and MyLISA members visit the tent library and conduct the sessions to these students on reading skills, use of books, books handling, types of books, newspaper reading, and other study aided activities. Expertise of a few renowned school librarians are used in providing the service. A lot of book based activities have been planned. Drawing, picture books, clay modeling, bookmark preparation, painting, etc., were also the part of the session scheduled. The library will be on open access and children can use the books any time at their will. They can also take home the books on loan basis. |

Prof. K.S. Deshapande Endowment Lecture (13) - 2014
Use IT to Unwrap the Wisdom in Manuscripts
‘The rich treasure of wisdom related to pesticides, steel, mathematical solutions, perfumes, health, medicine, etc., are stored in the Indian language manuscripts, mainly in Sanskrit. It is the responsibility of the concerned library and information professionals to make them available for study and research, by using the information technology. The modest estimates put the number of these manuscripts at around one million’ thus said Prof. Lakshmithathachar, Director, Samskrithi Foundation, Mysore, while delivering the Prof. K.S. Deshpande Endowment Lecture at the Department of Library and Information Science, Manasagangothri, Mysore.
Prof. Lakshmithathachar added, ‘with IT revolution providing access to the remotest recesses of knowledge sources, the huge demand to bring all the traditional Indian knowledge, principally in Sanskrit, but considerable portion in other classical languages too, into public domain is possible’. He mentioned about the effort by the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), which was initiated in 2002, and said ‘TKDL is transcribing some manuscripts, mainly belonging to Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha medicinal systems. But much remains to be done’.
The speaker enthralled the audience by quoting efforts recorded in manuscripts with relevance to Vimana Shastra (Aeronautics), Metallurgy, Cosmology, Medicine, and Pesticides. He mentioned that it was only on this basis that the Indian scientists fought against overseas patenting of turmeric & basmathi rice, and were instrumental in returning the credit to India. Further he added, it was possible to expedite patenting of hundreds of Indian foods, treatments and herbal medicine during the last 15 years on the basis of these manuscripts. He cautioned the information professionals about the lack of proper documentation of the scientific or research processes, which is good in Western, because of which they claim the rights.
Prof. Lakshmithathachar expressed his unhappiness about the status of manuscript libraries and the poor efforts made to untie the manuscripts in personal collection, temples, religious centers, etc., He said, there is an urgent need to focus on using IT for creating a worldwide network of databases of ancient Indian manuscripts such that anyone, in any part of the world, could easily access any word, phrase, sentence or statement from any digitized manuscript housed anywhere in the world. He cautioned the library professionals about the misuse of the hidden wisdom in these manuscripts, if it goes into the wrong hands.
The country cannot afford this and will have to look for alternative strategies. He suggested development of ‘speech to text software’, a machine readable text, which would bring down the time, energy and cost by 80 per cent. Prof Thathachar said that since Sanskrit had retained the uniform phonetic intonation remarkably well through millennia and through vedic recitations under Gurukula system, it raises hopes of success of ‘speech to text software’ enormously. However, the process would not be hassle-free as manuscripts have followed varied alphabets, modes and style of writing during different centuries.
Sharing his experience with more than 10,000 palm leaf manuscripts containing a wealth of knowledge about Indian customs, traditions, beliefs, and culture of food, he rubbished the tendency among certain scholars to discount such ancient Sanskrit texts and said, “Why would our scholars want to cheat themselves and the future generations? Unless it was important, nothing was written in the old days. The fact that there exists manuscript indicates its significance.”
While concluding he said Indians are unknowingly entering to ‘Software Slavery’ by providing service and selling our knowledge & skills to the Western world for low wages. Further, he said, ‘We should not be follower of the West, We should be leader for the West, if we are able to learn proper use of IT and understand our rich knowledge’.
Earlier Prof. K.S. Rangappa, Vice-Chancellor, University of Mysore, Mysore, while delivering the inaugural address, appreciated the services and commitment of Prof K.S. Deshpande to the profession as a librarian and academician. He lauded the Endowment, which was initiated in the name of such an elite personality and its service in spreading the knowledge needed to the library professionals by inviting eminent persons like Prof. Lakshmithathachar and organizing their lectures.
Prof. M. Chandrashekara, Chairman of the Department of Library and Information Science of the University welcomed the gathering. Dr. K.N. Prasad, Convenor, Prof. K.S. Deshpande Endowment Committee, Bangalore, presented the biographical sketch of Prof. K.S. Deshpande and the objectives of the Endowment. Dr. C.P. Ramasesh, Librarian, Mysore University Library, presented the vote of thanks. Prof. Mallinath Kumbar, Sri. S.N. Nagaraja, President, MyLISA, Mysore, faculty members, research scholars, students and the invited guests graced the occasion. There were several guests from far off places like Bangalore, Dharwad and Mumbai

Software Freedom Day 2013
Today is "Software Freedom Day" (SFD). It is observed all over the world. The day is celebrated to promote and understand the 'Software Freedom'. Many local events are organized at various parts of the world. It was in 2004, the first every SFD was celebrated. It is celebrated on different days every year. This year September 21 has been chosen for the celebration. You can find more about this at http://softwarefreedomday.org/.
Library profession, by its philosophy promotes openness - read as freedom - for more than a century now. From Melvil Dewey to Ranganathan to present day librarians, the profession endorses open access to materials. The devices, schedules, techniques, etc., developed by the librarians always are in tandem with this line of thinking.
The profession is blessed to have good and relatively early movement about open movement. CDS/ISIS, Koha, Evergreen, LoC's OPAC, MARC, etc., are all examples of our endorsement to the moment by library profession.
MyLISA in its own ways takes a small lead on this day. This warm- up communication is a part of our way of celebrating the day. MyLISA gives a call to all its members to spread the message of SFD further today by talking about the day with your library-users, friends, family members, well wishers, colleagues, students, and all those you may meet today. You can also feel free to communicate back to MyLISA the way you celebrated it. May be next year, MyLISA celebrate the day on a grand note!
