One-Day Seminar on Organizing for Digital Archiving
Mysore Librarians and Information Scientists Association (R) (MyLISA) Mysore, in association with Focuz-Infotech, Cochin and SDM Institute for Management Development (SDMIMD), Mysore, has organized a half-a-day seminar on Organizing for Digital Archiving on 18th September 2010 at Hotel Paivista, Mysore.
In the first session Dr. N.S. Harinarayana, Reader, Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, Mysore gave a lecture on “Digital Library - Concepts, Principles & Applications”. He began his lecture with a brief introduction about MyLISA and its professional activities. The speaker said that there are many definitions for Digital Library (DL). DL means different things to different people. He quoted a working definition of Digital Library Federation (DLF). The speaker answered to some of the myths prevailing about DL. He explained the various steps involved in digitization process. He mentioned about various issues to be considered while planning and implementation of DL project. In particular he discussed the issues related to hardware requirements, software selection criteria, technical issues like OCR (Optical character recognition) and problems in representing data in multilingual languages. He also highlighted the importance of metadata standards for indexing digital contents. He also discussed the financial and human resource requirement for developing digital library.
In the second session a practical demo of Tech Focuz Digital Library Ver 3.02 was organized. The developers of the Tech Focuz Digital Library Ver 3.02 gave a practical demo. They demonstrated the various features of Tech Focuz Digital Library Ver 3.02 and showed how the Tech Focuz digital library can be used for storing, organizing and retrieving digital contents. Tech Focuz Digital Library Ver 3.02 product has been using by many of the premier research organizations like DRDO, premier management institutes like SDM-IMD and media houses like Mathrubhumi for archiving digital contents, they said.
